Give Thanks (Safely)

by Jami Galindo

Today we are going to talk about a safe way to share turkey day dinner with your companion parrots.

Thanksgiving day is no different than any other day, our birds are part of our flock ... they want to spend time with us and do what we do. So I'm going to give you some safe options for your treasured companion on a special family (flock) day.

  1. Remember that animal protein is not recommended for companion parrots; just because it is a holiday it changes nothing. Stick to the veggies. NO Turkey.

  2. For the 'dressing' a teaspoon of cooked quinoa with cranberries and natural, raw walnut.

  3. For the sides we have green beans. You can steam them and squeeze a bit of lemon over the top with a sprinkle of celery seed. Roast some sweet potato, pumpkin, carrot, fennel, and beets and drizzle them with coconut oil and a sprinkle of fennel fronds. Roast a little kale and top it with some red palm oil and a sprinkle of red chili flakes. Don't forget the cranberries, they are a great addition.

  4. For the dessert how about some Granny Smith apples warmed with cinnamon and star anise topped with some roasted natural pecans.

  5. To wash it down, steep a little dish of cranberry and pomegranate 'tea' cooled to just warmer than room temperature.

This is just one of any number of suggestions you can pull together from the healthy options in our files on Go have a look and plan your holiday bird menu ... I will be happy to help you tweak your menu plan and you can find me on our FaceBook Forum.
